Do my cats get depressed? I know they’re lazy as fuck. But as they mope around all day Do they also think they suck? Do they deny themselves a bath Out of revenge for having skin? Do they hate routine as they step into it, again? Do they find it numbingly boring to do spelling and math? Do they ever shun the light and avoid the crowd— This I know they do— But do they purr so loud For reasons that are mostly political? Do my cats ever eat without pleasure? Do they reach out to friends hoping they won’t answer? Do they search in vain for beauty? Do they scroll through life beyond the window Looking only for stimulation--the next pill-- Just to find what excited them last week has lost its thrill? Do they wonder about the meaning of each of their nine lives, And whether it's too late, they’ve chosen the wrong path? Surely squirrels never entertain such thoughts, And mice run store to store too fast to regret what they bought. But my cats, do they think all will come to naught? Do they consider an end like that of Sylvia Plath? Even though the older cat is pawing up the stove, Something tells me no, That they do not, That this poem is complete and utter rubbish.
